VOIP Case Study

Company C wanted to retain their local Telephone number but move out of area and combine seamless home working.

The Solution

A local Public Relations Company bought their own premises but needed to keep the local telephone number that their customers knew. The directors wanted to work from home from time to time, but needed seamless operation.

This meant that a conventional telephone system with BT lines would not provide a solution. BT cannot move a number out of area. This can only be accomplished if you continue to rent the number but pay a divert charge for every call, and those calls are at BT rates!. We did some research and demonstrated a “hosted VOIP Telephone System”.

This is a “new” system that uses a VOIP telephone exchange based centrally. We then ported the local BT numbers over to retain them. The extension phones are then replaced with VOIP phones that talk over a standard broadband internet connection to the central host. The phones will “find” the host via the Internet. They can then be used as if they are extensions from the telephone system. This means that calls can be made (free) between them wherever they are in the world, and consequently calls can be transferred as if they are in the same building. When you need to call customers or suppliers that are not “on-net” the system cleverly routes the call as far as it can over the internet then breaks out locally. So both national and international calls are as cheap as I have seen them anywhere.

Their original local BT number now rings at all extensions and can be answered by any of them. The phones feature full caller display, voice mail and auto attendant if required. The administration of the system and phones is done online as is your personal or system contact list. Voice mail messages can be emailed anywhere in the world.

The system also includes a find me list should you not be available on your direct number. It can then call your mobile, home number and even your apartment in Spain.

As well as retaining your existing numbers, you can also have either geographical or non geographical direct dial numbers. So I could have a number for every major city in the UK, or even 0800, 0845 and 0870 numbers. Any number can be used as your dialing out number - presented as your number when dialing a mobile for example.

All this for the same cost as a BT analogue line.
